Home Automation

Home automation, smart home, IoT, also known as Internet of Things, what does it all mean? Well, basically they all describe devices connected in your home that either control themselves or other things. There are smart light bulbs, wall outlets, power strips, lamp modules, thermostats, locks, appliances, security systems, smart cameras and many more devices that are controlled by smart hubs, controllers, Amazon Alexa/Echo, Google Home, Apple HomeKit, Samsung SmartThings and Wink to mention a few of the controllers available.

How do you choose?

How do you decide how to get started and with what devices do you start with?

To answer these questions you need to determine three benchmarks:

  • Technical knowledge.
  • Budget
  • Time (available to invest)

Once these benchmarks are defined, we can move on to determine what home automation system is appropriate. Most new to home automation will start at the Novice stage. Those with more curiosity and technical know-how will progress to the Intermediate stage. A select few will move all the way to the Professional stage, installing systems for the other previously unmentioned category of home automation users, clients!
